...But the real hardship on the way to Santiago is the crossing of the
« meseta », the vast and desolated Spanish tableland where
the wheat fields stretch to loss of eyesight. « It's like
crossing a desert – said Corrado -. The pelting sun, harder in
this space, the warmth, the uniformity of the landscape, the deep
silence, are all elements which make you feel the road oppressive and
shut you in an distressing solitude ». « In this moment
– remember with emotion Simone – was precious the meeting
with Philippe, a young vietnamese who we have met around the seventh
stage. It was a moment particularly hard. I felt oppressed by the
tiredness, but more by the silence. I was discouraged, I felt the road
inside my head which mashed my soul. Philippe, with his songs gave me
again happiness on my way, he helped me in to surpass this hardship
which was the hardest part of all my pilgrimage »…
