From Roma to Santiago di Compostela via Arles

From Roma it's possible to follow the via Francigena (A) or to go at first towards Assisi (B).

A - via francigena

A1 - Roma-Sarzana

Two "guides" can be recommended :
Guida alla Via Francigena, 900 chilometri a piedi sulle strade del pellegrinaggio verso Roma
La via francigena guida - vademecum dal Gran San Bernardo a Roma e raccordo da Arles-F a Vercelli
In Sarzana, it is possible to continue on via francigena up to the col de Montgenèvre/colle di Montginevro (A2b) or to join the alta via dei monti liguri (A2a).

A2a - Sarzana-Vintimiglia (cammino della costa)

There is 19km not marked out even without path between Sarzana and the beginning of the alta via dei monti liguri which will lead you of Ceparana (Bolano) until Vintimiglia (11km of Menton, France).

No synthetic information but two useful sites for these 250km :
one compostelan : http://perso.orange.fr/tr.girouet/soleil/rome.htm
one touristic : alta via dei monti liguri
in Vintimiglia, to reach the border and Menton (France) you will have tofollow the sea road.

A2b - Sarzana-col de Montgenèvre/colle del Montginevro

The two guides mentionned in A1 included this part with more details for « guida alla via francigena, 900 chilometri a piedi sulle strade del pellegrinaggio verso Roma ».

B - variant on the steps of Francis of Assisi

B1 - Roma-Rieti

No specific information on the via salaria which join Roma and Rieti (93km).

B2 - Rieti-Assisi

The valley of Rieti is considered as the holy valley of the franciscanism, a circuit on paths and small roads connect the various hermitages where Francis of Assisi stayed and which belong to the history of the franciscan family but also of the universal church because it is in one of these hermitage ( Greccio) that Francis reconstituted for the first time the crib of Bethleem.
This road making the tour of the valley, it will be necessary to choose between the tour by the West  and :
Fonte Colombo where Francis wrote his second rule of the friars minors. It's possible to see a tau which it said to have been drawn by Francis
Greccio where Francis created the first reconstruction of the crib
or by the East and :
La Foresta where took place the miracle of the vineyard
Poggio Bustone were Francis received the assurance of the forgiveness of his sins and the future of its brotherhood

whatever you decide the book Di qui passò Francesco, 350 chilometri a piedi tra La Verna, Gubbio, Assisi… fino a Rieti. Tutti i sentieri, gli ostelli dove dormire, le foreste, gli eremi e i luoghi più significativi della tradizione will allow you to follow the path of Francis to La Verna where he was stigmatized through Assisi.
To live this walking in franciscan ground, I recommend the acquisition of  guide Assise et les ermitages sur les pas de Saint François of Théophile Desbonnets.

B3a - Assisi-via francigena (San Gimignano)

A guide is in preparation within the framework of a new road joining Vézelay and Assisi  : http://chemins.assise.free.fr

B3b - Assisi-La Verna-via francigena (Lucca)

The guide mentionned in B2 will allow you to discover the franciscan places till La Verna where Francis was stigmatized.
It is attractive within the framework of a spiritual initiative but it will then be necessary to find its own road between La Verna-Firenze-Lucca (on via francigena), 200km.
